Our 5th grade scholars took learning to new heights last week during an exciting, hands-on STEM experience at @starbase_indiana_gary ! š From coding and racing robots to launching rockets, our scholars put their creativity, curiosity, and problem-solving skills to the test as they explored the exciting worlds of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics!
š¤ Robotics & Coding: Scholars programmed robots to navigate maps, competed in friendly races, and built and tested LEGO robots.
š Physics in Action: Through rocket launches, projectile experiments, and engineering challenges, scholars explored Newtonās laws of motion and discovered how forces, gravity, and momentum work in the real world.
š Teamwork & Friendly Competition: Scholars collaborated, tackled challenges, and earned points along the way, with some even earning the special honor of ringing the bell to celebrate their achievements!

What a special evening celebrating our trailblazing athletes alongside their families, coaches, and staff!
A HUGE shoutout to Coach Kelly and Coach Douglas for putting together such a beautiful and thoughtful celebration! From personalized posters and magnets to photos highlighting our girls, every detail was a reminder of just how special this team is! š„¹š
Every player received an individualized award recognizing the unique contributions they brought to our team. Our seniors received extra-special recognition, including footballs signed by their teammates, commemorative plaques reminding them of the life lessons football teaches us, and special awards honoring their leadership and legacy. š
š We enjoyed a delicious Olive Garden dinner while reliving the unforgettable plays, memories, and moments from our season highlight video! And of course, we couldn't let the evening end without celebrating our INCREDIBLE coaches, whose dedication, leadership, and belief in our girls made this season possible! ā¤ļø

And the excitement didn't stop there! Two of our seniors, Alyssa and Alicia, were even invited to try out for the professional team! šš„

One way we have brought this commitment to life is through our dedicated Club & Enrichment Block four days a week for middle school students. And today, weāre highlighting a club where MATH comes to life in a pretty awesome way! š„
šāš FANTASY FOOTBALL & MATH CLUB!
Led by Ms. Kirley & Ms. Holyfield, this club brings together a love of football, statistical analysis, a little friendly competition, and LOTS of MATH!
Our middle school General Managers started the season by drafting their very own fantasy football teams and creating team names like the Diamond Divas, Fancy Tacos, Mighty Flames, and more! šš„
But the real work happens every week.
š Students analyze their playersā real NFL statistics.
š§® They use those stats to mathematically calculate each playerās fantasy points.
š They add up their roster scores to determine their team total.
š Then they compete in weekly head-to-head matchups!
Each week, we celebrate our head-to-head matchup winners AND the students whose players earned the most points at each position!
There is something BEAUTIFUL about watching the JOY when math comes to life through something our students are already passionate about. Suddenly multiplication, division, decimals, data analysis, and problem solving arenāt just problems on a page. They have a purpose. š
And yes, the competition gets a LITTLE serious. šš

One of the goals in our strategic plan this year was BIG: increase the course opportunities available to our students by 20%! šāØ Because while Steel City may be a small school, we are committed to providing our students with BIG opportunities, BIG experiences, and BIG access to the world around them. š
One way we are doing that this year is by piloting new virtual language immersion courses! For the first time, our high school students, along with a small cohort of 8th graders, now have access to šÆšµ Japanese I šŖšø Spanish I and šŖšø Spanish II
And our students are embracing the opportunity to stretch themselves, learn something completely new, and even dream about where these new skills might take them! šāļø But donāt just take our word for it. Hear directly from our Flames:
š¬ Aaron: āMy Japanese experience has been good so far. I enjoy getting to learn new words and sayings every day.ā
š¬ Demetrius: āMy favorite thing about the Japanese class is learning the language because I want to travel to Japan someday.ā
š¬ Cyriah: āMy experience in Japanese has been good so far. My favorite thing about Japanese class is learning a new language and understanding some words I didnāt understand before.ā
š¬ Jalieyah: āI quite enjoy my virtual Spanish class. The teachers are very understanding when we donāt understand something... Great class and experience in general!ā
