College GO! Week continued with another BIG moment for our Steel City scholars! On Monday, we were excited to welcome members of the Purdue University Northwest Admissions Team to Steel City! šš
Admissions counselors hosted separate sessions for our juniors and seniors, giving students the opportunity to learn more about PNW, explore campus opportunities, understand admissions requirements, and ask questions about what it takes to make college their next step.
And for NINE members of the Class of 2027, that next step became a little more real. They were offered admission to Purdue Northwest! ššš

More than 1,000 students came together for a day focused on access, opportunity, and their futures, with colleges, universities, employers, armed forces, sororities, and community organizations all in one place.
Our seniors had the opportunity to connect directly with representatives, explore postsecondary pathways, learn about admissions, and, best of all, see students awarded scholarships on the spot! š°š

One way we have brought this commitment to life is by redesigning our master schedule to include a dedicated Club & Enrichment Block four days a week for our middle school students. By building enrichment directly into the school day, we are ensuring that access and opportunity are available to every student.

Our girls played their HEARTS OUT this week in their first game of the season! After missing several weeks of practice because of the derecho and school closures, we were wildly impressed by the way they showed up and competed.
The grit. The teamwork. The improvement from the first half to the second. And most of all, the POTENTIAL. š„ It was all on full display, and we cannot wait to watch this team continue to grow, learn, compete and get better every single week.

There are several important updates and opportunities available right now:
š FEMA INDIVIDUAL ASSISTANCE
Great news for our community! Following the Major Disaster Declaration, FEMA applications are now open for eligible Lake County residents impacted by the August storms. Assistance may be available for housing, home repairs, personal property and other disaster-related needs.
š SNAP FOOD REPLACEMENT | DEADLINE AUGUST 31
If you currently receive SNAP benefits and lost food because of the storms or power outages, you may be eligible to have those benefits replaced. The application period has been extended through August 31, 2026.
š„¦ FREE FOOD DISTRIBUTION | AUGUST 27
Calumet Township is hosting a free drive-through food distribution for Gary and unincorporated Calumet Township residents. Registration begins at 8:00 AM and distribution at 9:00 AM, while supplies last.
š§ FREE BOTTLED WATER | AUGUST 30
Gary residents can receive free bottled water at the City Life Center of Northwest Indiana from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
ā” WEATHERHEAD REPAIR ASSISTANCE
Legacy Foundation is offering assistance to City of Gary homeowners whose electrical weatherheads were damaged during the storms. There is no household income requirement, and eligible repairs will be completed through participating licensed and insured electricians.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to our partners at Incandescent Transportation, who took the time to drive all of our bus routes over the weekend and today to ensure they can be safely run before we welcome students back on Tuesday, August 25! We are happy to share that all routes can run successfully, and morning pick-up times will remain as shared during registration.
As a reminder, please have your student at their stop at least 10 minutes before their scheduled pick-up time and remain there for up to 10 minutes after the scheduled time, especially during these first few weeks as routes and timing become solidified. Do not forget that students are not allowed to ride the bus without their ID.
