This week, members of our Student Government šļø attended the Diversity and Inclusion š«±š¾āš«²š¼Symposium held by the Urban League of Northwest Indiana š¤ at Valparaiso University! š¤š While in attendance, students engaged in conversations š£ļø on this year's topic: "What is DEI and What is Not?" Congratulations š to students Nate McClain, Cherish Douglas, Niya Lucas, and Cory McClain for contributing to such an important šØ conversation on behalf of Steel City and Ms. Moss for organizing this experience! šāļøš„
Yesterday our 2nd graders experienced an incredible field trip š to the Chicago Auditorium Theater šļøš to watch a performance by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater! ššæšŗš¾2nd graders were treated two selections, "Ailey Classics" and "Revelations." Afterwards they received a signed poster and got to meet one of the senior company members, Renaldo Maurice, a Gary native š who danced with our very own Ms. Arthur in middle school and high school! 𤩠A huge shoutout to Ms. Arthur for her work planning this field trip and making the performing arts šššæš¼ come alive for our 2nd graders! šāļøš„ #TransformativeExperiences #BoundlessOpportunities #CommittedToGary

Yesterday, Steel City freshmen visited the Chicago Shakespeare Theater šļø š on Navy Pier š³ļø , where they watched a modern interpretation of "A Midsummerās Night Dream." š ššš¾ Some sophomores even tagged along after having a great experience last year! š
Through the student-friendly performance š¤ and the Q&A šš¾āāļø with the cast, the trip was an amazing opportunity to enhance the study of Shakespeare š and to get a closer look š at what careers in the performing arts could look like. Quite a few Steel City students can envision themselves on stage one day and were eager to learn more! š¤©
After the show, students enjoyed lunch š“on the pier with a view of the Chicago skyline šļø ā some of them, taking one final bow! šāļøš„ Thank you to Ms. Dzwonczyk for making the special experience happen for our freshmen!

Over the past two weeks, our incredible Steel City third graders have been bringing bold colors and big ideas to life! Last week, they explored the element of line and crafted vibrant cityscapes inspired by pop artist James Rizzi using watercolors. šļøšØ
This week, they dove into abstract art, drawing inspiration from Black contemporary artist Reggie Laurent. Using organic and geometric shapes, they let their creativity flow in ways that were uniquely their own! šµš”šŗ
