At Steel City Academy this year, weāve placed a bold, intentional focus on building a strong, joyful math culture. š¢āØ
From creating aspirational math environments to investing deeply in positive math identities for our staff, we are doing the work to ensure that math is not just something our students do, it is something they feel confident engaging in and genuinely enjoy.
Through our Steel City Math Institute, our team has been grounding their practice in the building blocks of true conceptual understanding ā from counting and cardinality to composition and decomposition, all the way through unitizing and place value. This is the foundation. This is the work. š„
And our classrooms are bringing it to life in the most beautiful ways.
Shoutout to our incredible Kā1 team, Ms. Fairley and Ms. Larkins, for leading with both purpose and joy in their math classes! From dice games that build cardinality to multiple representations that deepen number sense, their math stations are alive with engagement, curiosity, and confidence. š²š
This is what it looks like when strong instruction meets joyful learning. This is what it looks like when we build MATHletes from the very beginning.
We are so proud. We are just getting started. š«š„

So much JOY and GRATITUDE as we reflect on our recent Feed the Flame Food Pantry efforts! šš„
This season, we were proud to host BOTH an in-person Feed the Flame Pantry for our families, community partners, and staff, as well as a drive-through pantry for our Steel City families. Together, these efforts allowed us to support over 120 families across our community!
We know grocery prices are high, and moments like this can go a long way for all of us! What a true blessing to be able to come together and support one another in such a meaningful way.
A huge THANK YOU to the City of Gary Government and the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana for making this possible. Your partnership continues to make a real difference in the lives of our families.

At Steel City, we know that the strength, knowledge, and skill of our team directly shapes the experience our students have every single day. šš„ Thatās why we place a premium on strong, consistent, and strategic professional development for every role in our organization. And while our Senior Leaders spend so much of their time pouring into others, we believe just as deeply in pouring into them.
This week, our Senior Leadership Team, Ms. Kirley, Principal Pratt, Coach Kelly, and Mr. Moore, headed to the City of Brotherly Love for the College Board | Dream Deferred Conference. This was more than a trip. It was a commitment to be in the room, engaged in the conversation, and helping shape the future of education for African American students.
From powerful keynote sessions to deep learning around building AP pathways, equity & compassion driven counseling, and creating college and career aspirational environments, our team leaned all the way in.
And of course, we had to stop by the iconic Rocky statue for a little extra inspiration. š„ āAs long as youāre willing to go through all the battling to get to where you want to get, whoās got the right to stop you?ā
We left feeling inspired, aligned, and even more committed to ensuring every Steel City student has access to the future they deserve. āØ
